Further information about Julius Neumann

After painting "Coup de Gråce for a 109", I was interviewed on a radio programme about my work. Later, on that day, I was informed by a telephone caller that Herr Neumann is still very much alive and had visited the scene of the crash two years before. Of this fact I was totally unaware and was delighted to hear the news. I was able to obtain Herr neumann's address and wrote to him. I was quite enthralled to receive a phone call from this pilot from his home in Germany and later I was in receipt of a letter with more information including photos herewith.

Julius Neumann is living proof of how one-time enemies can become friends. It was in 1979 that he met the man who shot him down: then Sgt Jim Hallowes of 43 Squadron. The two men and their wives became close friends and often met and shared holidays until Jim's death in 1987. Julius Neumann still visits England every few years. On these occasions he makes a point of paying his respects at Sqn Ldr Hallowes' grave at Tangmere
