Jonz collection of models
Please note that these
items are not for sale.
The models are primarily used for visualisation purposes at the
start of a new painting.
For instance: The Spitfire model was used to obtain a nice attitude
angle for the
"Stapme takes the Salute" painting and the Hurricane
model for
"The American Friend" Billy Fiske painting.
As the Airfix detail
is so good, I have cut away parts of the outer fabric to reveal
the interesting parts. Some are shown strung from the ceiling
of our old gallery and include information.
For instance: The 109 Yellow 6 is that of Obltnt. Julius Neumann
who commanded the 6th Staffel of JG27 on
the 18th August 1940, the day he crash-landed on the hillside
just above Shanklin Old Village where
our studio and gallery was recently situated.

The page is then linked to details
and photos of Julius Neumann
I have painted the
models in artists' acrylic colours to give a nice matt surface
which I finally stroke with a silver very dry-brush effect.
This highlights the protrusions and rivets giving the appearance
of a thinly painted and worn combat aircraft as opposed to
highly finished enamel which I feel is too artificial. I do a
little airbrush work to soften edges of the camouflage and
show oil, exhaust and gunsmoke streaks.
The Heinkel 111 above
wasn't quite the one I wanted, as the upper gun turret is wrong
but it
was available "off the shop shelf" and at the Airfix
price for a 1/72nd scale kit, it can't be bad.
After finishing it, I took photos in various attitudes for my
painting. "Return Fire"
The model collection
grew and grew! When we finally closed our gallery at Shanklin,
the models were
brought home and placed in glass fronted display cases which I
made especially to fit my
new, very small home studio and, .... The collection continues
to grow!
